Daniel's writings have long perplexed biblical scholars. In fact, some scholars are so perplexed by them, (or in other words, they don't get the point) those theologians have dismissed Daniel's writings as non-prophetic.
Here is what they don't understand, this being the point and purpose of Daniel's writings: Daniel is foretelling periods of Jewish captivity, or domination, by Gentile kingdoms. His writings are a major revelation, that, in Daniel's own pen transcribes that only 'the wise shall understand.'
This lesson will only provide a brief summary of the topic, by no means plumbing the depths of the content of his work. A separate section of lessons will be provided at a future date that delve into the meat and meaning of this greatly inspired collection of prophecies.
But one other point to raise: why is this important to the topic of When God's People Stray? There are several answers, but foremost is this: Daniel reveals a series of events in the life of the ancient covenant people--the Jews. Moses' writings were that these people would wander and be scattered, but eventually would find favor and return, as would the other tribes, to Jesus. While there were ancient time periods of Jewish captivity, one of which Daniel lived through, Daniel saw future times of captivity, including the worst captivity of all in the last days.
The time period of the Jews final captivity marks the end of not only Jewish domination of Gentiles over Jews, but also the return of Jews to a knowledge of Jesus Christ. This is monumental, the event prophesied of since Moses' day. It therefore is imperative to understand the writings of Daniel. (to be continued shortly)
