Hebrew Parallelism

Ellipsis

Ellipsis

Ellipsis is a techique of Hebrew Writing where a verb (or noun) may be omitted in a following phrase. The omission brings emphasis to the statement, almost as if to leave the word out heightens its importance

Ellipsis from the Bible:

1 Corinthians 10:24  (KJV)
Let no man seek his own, but every man another’s wealth.

In this verse, 'seek' is omitted in the phrase 'but every man (seek) another's wealth.

The Book of Mormon has a tremendous amount of Ellipsis.

Nephi's language was Hebrew/Aramaic. Before the Babylonian Conquest, Israel still wrote in a paleo Hebrew form.

The block characters of Hebrew didn't evolve until after Israel returned from Babylon.:

1 Nephi 1:1 Yea, I make a record in the language of my father (i.e. the Hebrew/Aramaic language),
Which consists of the learning of the Jews,
And the language of the Egyptians;

Ellipsis serve as evidence to the authenticity of the Book of Mormon's origin from Hebrew thought.

Some Book of Mormon examples of Ellipsis follow.

Missing word or phrase is inserted in brackets [] to suggest the Ellipsis

And there shall also be heard of wars and rumors of wars and earthquakes in divers places.

Ether 5:4 Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world, yea, even a place at the right hand of God, Which hope cometh of faith maketh an anchor to the souls of men, Which would make them sure and steadfast, always abounding in good works, being led to glorify God.

Wherefore, whoso believeth in God might with surety hope for a better world,

Yea, even a place at the right hand of God,

Which hope cometh of faith.

[Which hope] maketh an anchor to the souls of men,

Which would make them sure and steadfast,

   Always abounding in good works.

Being led to glorify God.
